Hawkchurch Community Shop
Welcome!
Our community shop has been running since May 2014 and is going from strength to strength. It was set up and has been run entirely by volunteers, servicing the needs of the local community and visitors to the area. You can find us on the opposite side to the church, on the right of the village hall…. follow the signs!
Hawkchurch Community Shop is proud to provide a service in a rural area for the local community and visitors to the area. Customers can shop locally and reduce their carbon footprint at the same time. We receive many positive comments about the range of goods available and for the friendly and helpful service that the shop provides.

How the Community Shop is run
Set up in 2014 the Hawkchurch Community Shop Limited is registered society. While it is run as a business with robust business planning and management, it is run entirely by volunteers. The shop has a Management Committee which is accountable to the Shareholders. Shareholders are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting where they vote upon reports from the Chair, the Treasurer and the Secretary. The Committee for the following year is also decided through Shareholder votes. Shareholders receive a copy of the AGM minutes.
The Community Shop constitution
Hawkchurch Community Shop Limited has a constitution that is registered as a society for the benefit of the community with the Financial Services Authority. The community shop exists in order to carry on business and trade for the benefit of the community and not for anyone’s private benefit, prudently ensuring that the business operates at the profit margin agreed by the Committee each year, retaining profits and applying them to achieve the Shop’s purpose.
The Constitution is available for anyone to read upon application to the Secretary.

Volunteers always welcomed!
Hawkchurch Community Shop is run entirely by volunteers. The volunteering commitment is very flexible. A regular weekly shift is for two hours.
Volunteers can be partnered with another volunteer so that shifts can be shared or you can be on the rota to cover an occasional shift for those who have a regular slot but, for one reason or another, have diary clashes.
It’s a great way to meet people and be part of our Hawkchurch community. Full training will be given and support is ongoing.
If you are interested in finding out more about joining our team of volunteers, you can contact us by:
Telephoning the shop on
01297 678 999
Emailing the shop hawkchurchshop@gmail.com
Leave your contact details with the volunteer on duty at the shop the next time you visit.
Please provide either a phone number or email address.
Whichever way you contact us, our volunteer coordinator Chris Andrews will get back to you
Funding
The shop has been funded from the outset from a variety of sources. In addition to profits from sales that are fed back into the business, there have been many fundraising activities (such as stalls at the Village Fete and Christmas Fayre) and donations from individuals and community groups (including Uplyme Ladies Group and Hawkwell Caravan Park).
The team have also been successful in obtaining grants from a variety of sources:
- Community Council of Devon
- Devon County Council
- East Devon District Council
- Devon Community Fund
- Hawkchurch Parish Council
- The National Lottery Power to Change Community Business Fund
